Wow… what a year!

When trying to craft this year’s holiday card, it was challenging to come up with the words. After brainstorming with the team at Studio Red Design, we chose a family favorite for this year’s card: The Mad Lib!

First we wrote a little poem about the year:

2020 has been a wild ride for us all,
Pandemics, election madness, and a warm Fall,
Children learning from home,
Inability to roam.
Smiles hidden under masks,
Fond hopes that this time shall pass.
It’s behind us now with a brand new year,
From us to you, wishes of love, safety and cheer!

Then we replaced key words with the classic Mad Lib-style blanks.

For the image of our family on the cover, I usually find an illustrator on Etsy that matches my aesthetic feelings for the year, and commission a custom portrait. This year, I was so pleased when my 13-year-old daughter Freya overcame her self-doubt and agreed to do the art.

Behind the picture of our family, Freya drew paintings on the wall that express the year’s highlights. A key on the back cover explains that painting #3, for example, refers to my Kombucha-making adventure and painting #7 shows how we redesigned our backyard with a fire pit and vegetable garden.

While no words can sum up this year, we hope that people on our mailing list might at least wrap up it up with a chuckle.

Here’s wishing you too a warm and bountiful holiday and a ___________(adjective) 2021!
