Spanish Interlude

Just back from a glorious ten-day jaunt across the vibrant heart of Spain, and I'm still buzzing! Trading the daily grind for the rhythm of a different culture was exactly the refreshing break I needed. Gorgeous weather followed us from the Mediterranean coast to the bustling capital, making every moment an absolute pleasure.

Our itinerary was a whirlwind of discovery, hitting three of Spain's most iconic cities: Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid. Each offered its own unique flavor, from Gaudí's fantastical architecture to world-class museums and stunning plazas.

Beyond the main cities, some of the best moments were the day trips that peeled back layers of Catalan and Spanish history.

  • The Benedictine Abbey of Montserrat: The journey itself was an adventure! The winding drive up the mountain offered increasingly dramatic views of the serrated, saw-like peaks. Once we parked, the walk up to the monastery was long and rewarding. Surrounded by those surreal rock formations, you really feel a sense of peace and history, stunning scenery and spiritual calm.

  • Tossa Del Mar: This charming coastal town was the perfect escape, offering stunning views of the sea and the ancient walls of the Vila Vella. A breath of fresh, salty air!

  • Cardona Salt Mine: Stepping into the surreal, pink-hued depths of this cultural park was truly a unique experience—a fascinating look at the power of nature and industry.

  • Girona: My Favorite! The medieval streets of Girona absolutely stole my heart. Getting utterly lost in the tight, winding alleyways of the old quarter felt like stepping onto a movie set—which, of course, it was! I had a blast hunting down and recognizing a few of the Game of Thrones shot locations. The sheer history woven into those cobblestones was captivating.

One unexpected highlight of the trip was the incredible street art and graffiti scene, especially vibrant in both Barcelona and Valencia. It’s a dynamic, often politically charged, and always colorful side of modern Spanish culture. While I don't have all my photos uploaded yet, here’s a preview of the visual feast:

  • Valencia's El Carmen District: The old town of Valencia, particularly El Carmen, is an open-air gallery. We found everything from huge, detailed murals to the iconic little "ninjas" by artist David de Limón, popping up in unexpected corners. The colors, bathed in Mediterranean sun, were spectacular.

  • Barcelona's Edge: In neighborhoods like Poblenou and El Raval, the street art ranges from political commentary to large, abstract masterpieces. It provides a raw, unfiltered look at the city’s pulse.

Some photographic highlights follow below.

Taking the time to simply experience a different culture and a different pace of life was invaluable. It's amazing how much perspective you gain just by observing how others live, eat, and celebrate. Spain, you were a delight!
